Introduction to Geothermal Exchange Systems

Tags: Train Green, SEICBP, contractors

Course Description

An introduction to geothermal heating and cooling systems will be provided for those with an existing basic understanding of buildings and HVAC systems. Attendees will learn the basics of how heat pump systems work and how coupling heat pump systems to ground coupled heat exchangers (aka geothermal ground loops) results in highly efficient fossil-fuel-free heating and cooling systems. The different methods for constructing ground coupled heat exchangers will be presented. Types of ground coupled heat exchangers include vertical, horizontal, standing column well, open loop, and surface water-body system designs. The course will also cover other options for heat exchange such as waste-water heat exchange and ambient temperature district energy loops. Suitability for each ground coupled heat exchanger for urban environments such as DC will be discussed. The design, development, and construction processes required for implementation of geothermal systems will be outlined. An overview of incentives for implementing geothermal systems will be provided.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the basics of how geo-exchange systems work.
  2. Learn the basic types of ground coupled heat exchangers; understand how they work, and understand which options are feasibly for projects in DC.
  3. Become familiar with the geothermal system design process.
  4. Be aware of the financial incentives available for geothermal heating and cooling systems.
